When we left New Jersey, I think we were really in a "boy am I ready to be home" kind of mode, and we planned on driving hard. We did make one more stop, though, at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the scene of the very bloody and very important Civil War battle. Above is a view of this picturesque little town that was taken by storm when Union and Confederate forces met here. We didn't see all of the battlefield, but did stop at the Visitors' Center, where we viewed a sobering and very well-done movie about the battle, narrated by Morgan Freeman. We then embarked on a self-guided driving tour of the park, which we cut short when we realized it would take much more time than we had to spend. Some of what we did see is pictured below.

This area is known as Devil's Den, and was the scene of some of the worst fighting. Below you can see it up close, and imagine Confederate sharpshooters tucked in here, firing away at Union officers across the valley who had no idea they were targets.

Scott, taking advantage of a rock-climbing opportunity. Notice the bare feet -- the rocks were very hot, but all he had handy were flip-flops.

This area is known as Little Round Top and is across the valley from Devil's Den -- this position was ultimately successful defended by the Union troops, but losses on both sides were great.

Scott and Kendra -- It was hot and humid and we were all just a bit cranky, so I'm glad they were able to muster smiles for this photo. Kendra had just told me, "I am
so done with touring!" We'll have to go back to Gettysburg when we can do it justice, preferably in the fall or the spring!

I'm sure that my hormones are all out of whack, but I just sat at my computer and cried reading your posts and looking at your pictures -- I am so grateful for our wonderful country and our fabulous family! Your pictures of the Statue of Liberty are so beautiful -- all of your pictures are great. And I love that quote from Lincolns 2nd Innagural Address. It is really amazing, isn't it? Thank you for sharing your travels with us -- next time I want to come!!
Your pics of Gettysburg brought back some good memories. Our trip to Gettysburg seemed so rushed. I'd love to go back without the kiddos next time. I love American history. I can't wait to see everything in D.C. . . .Someday:)
