President Wada conducts interviews with the missionaries every other transfer, or approximately every twelve weeks -- in between are zone conferences. We didn't know we'd be participating in those interviews, but sure enough, we were on the schedule. So we drove to Kichijoji on Thursday afternoon where the Honbu (headquarters, mission office) is. We had the location on our GPS and the drive was actually pretty uneventful -- took about an hour and a half to drive 26 miles, but it was good. The last twenty minutes or so were in Kichijoji, trying to work around road construction and one way streets. Bruce finally started ignoring the GPS altogether and pretty quick we were there. It was great to visit with Elder and Sister Powell, the mission office couple, and the Evans, the misison office couple from the Tokyo mission were also there. They are going home next week, after serving 18 months, and were doing some final training with Sister Powell before they leave.
President and Sister Wada were very kind and gracious and supportive. President Wada asked specificially how we were getting along and expressed that it had been a challenge for him at first to spend so much time with his wife after having a very busy career in business and then in Church employment. We said we were doing well, we only come to near blows when Bruce is driving and I'm navigating -- that can be a challenge!
After our interview, we did a little shopping with the Powells and Evans at the Daiso -- dollar store -- where Sister Evans wanted to buy seeds. Then we planned to have Japanese food for dinner, but we were parked right next to McDonald's and Sister Evans just pretty much insisted that we eat there. "We're here, we have a parking place, let's just eat" as she marched inside. So we shrugged our shoulders and followed her. I told Bruce our kids will not believe that we're in Kichijoji, Tokyo, Japan -- and we're eating at McDonalds!!
