Artist at Work

Since our return to Japan, Bruce has determined he needs a hobby. We aren't as busy as we were while serving in the office, and Bruce is restless to do something with his hands, so he decided to take up carving. I showed you the knife he bought at the shrine sale -- well, he took it to the auto shop on the base and used their bench grinder to reshape it so he could use it as a carving knife. He looked online at photographs of turtles, he found the hunk of knobby wood at the shrine sale to use as a backdrop, got what he thinks is camphor wood from the hobby shop -- and this is what he created:

We were both so pleased and relieved that he was able to do this without pain or stiffness in his hands. He plans to carve five more -- he researched six different types of turtles he wants to display here -- so it'll be fun to see what he comes up with!
