Pouring the Foundation
Bruce poured the footings and foundations in small sections, so he could handle each pour by himself. The backhoe was provided by a friend, a retired contractor who still owns the equipment and likes to keep his hand in the business a little bit. He charged Bruce an hourly rate as a backhoe operator -- which was less than it would have cost Bruce to rent a backhoe, and much more convenient. They worked well together -- of course, the entire neighborhood thought they were both lunatics, excavating and pouring concrete in freezing temperatures and snow! :-)
